About the Office

The Enugu State Government is dedicated to advancing climate action at the subnational level through robust climate policies that align with Nigeria’s updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) targets. The Office of the Senior Adviser on Climate Policy and Sustainable Development plays a pivotal role in this endeavor. This office is responsible for identifying and executing priority policy actions and climate-relevant projects, developing a comprehensive climate financing strategy and implementation plan, and enhancing institutional capacity to adopt and implement climate-responsive policies. The Senior Adviser provides expert advisory services to guide the implementation of climate policy and sustainable development initiatives across the state. By fostering innovative and effective climate strategies, this office ensures that Enugu State leads the way in climate action and sustainability within Nigeria even as the state’s climate policy is crucial to achieving the following goals of Governor Peter Mbah

About the Senior Adviser

Professor Chukwumerije Okereke

Professor Chukwumerije Okereke is a distinguished figure in the realm of global climate and environmental governance, serving as a beacon of expertise and leadership in the field. With a prestigious background as a Professor of Global Climate and Environmental Governance and Director of the Center for Climate and Development at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Nigeria, Professor Okereke brings decades of experience and insight to his role. His illustrious career spans prestigious academic institutions such as the University of Reading, where he served as Co-Director of the Climate and Justice Centre and the Leverhulme Climate Justice Doctoral Scholarship Programme. Prior to this, he held the position of Senior Research Fellow and Head of the Climate and Development Centre at the Smith School Enterprise and the Environment, University of Oxford. Professor Okereke’s work is dedicated to understanding the intricate interplay between policies, strategies, and institutional frameworks essential for addressing climate change and natural resource degradation in Africa, within the context of sustainable development and economic transformation. He has led numerous high-profile international projects, including pioneering efforts such as the Rwandan Green Growth and Climate Resilience Project, the Africa Adaptation Initiative, and the United Nations Economic Commission project on Africa’s influence on the international climate regime. As a Coordinating Lead Author of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) AR6, Professor Okereke continues to shape global discourse and action on climate change. Beyond academia, he actively engages in outreach and charity work, exemplifying his commitment to leveraging expertise for the betterment of society. With an extensive publication record and a wealth of accolades, Professor Okereke remains a leading voice in the pursuit of a sustainable and prosperous future for all.
